Stop making a mess of our street...

We recently received a complaint in our Stirling office from a neighbour of one of our tenants. They informed us that one of Grant Property's tenants have causing a bit of disturbance in their street.

The complaint was relating to Grant Property's tenants not using the correct bins for recycling, which resulted in the bins were not being picked up and the tenants were accused of leaving the bins out for days.

The neighbour highlighted that the main issue was that the bad weather meant that the bins were being blown about the street and causing a mess.

When we contacted our tenant we found out that they were actually unaware of when the bins are collected, nor were they aware of what bins to put out on what day. Rather than them knowingly being a nuisance, the tenants were in fact unaware of what to do. So we investigated to find out in order to stop any further issues in the street.

We checked Stirling City Council’s web page and found the following LINK.
This page lets you enter your own postcode and address, then provides you with personalised information on a whole host of really useful information about your local area including:
  • Bins
  • Council Tax
  • Councillors
  • Primary Schools
  • Secondary Schools
And also Maps showing the nearest
  • Bus stops
  • Local offices
  • Libraries
  • Recycling centres
The share facility on the personalised page allowed us to email the page directly to our tenants. We think this is a great website with really useful information for anyone in the city and what makes it so good is that it is personalised to your postcode! We love it that much that we have decided to incorporate it into our moving in process, so we will inform each new Stirling tenant about the page when they move in.

So from a story that started out with a complaint, through a little bit of good customer care, we managed to turn it around and help our tenants and their neighours out. We now have happier tenants and happier neighbours too!

Do you have similar issues concerning lack of knowledge of you local area? We are always here to help you with kind of information, however we suggest checking out your local government's website as it provides you with all the information to keep you right.

Halloween Party at Ninewells Hospital Childrens Cancer ward...

Grant Property staff in our Dundee office are having a Halloween party at Ninewells Hospital in the children's cancer ward on Monday 31st October 2011. There will be over 40 children at the party dressed in fancy dress.

We plan to decorate the ward and the kids will be able to enjoy the party snacks we are providing. We hope they all have a great time and that the party is fun for them. We just hope that the kids Halloween costumes don't frighten Jodie from our office who will be there enjoying all the fun!

Look out for the photos of the party on Facebook. If you are going out for Halloween be sure to do the same, we would love to see your crazy costumes!

Do you have plans for Halloween? What are you planning on dressing up as? Are there any other events like this going on in and around the city?

University tuition fees could be lowered...

There are thousands of teenagers across the UK currently preparing to apply for university. The majority of them will want to apply before a deadline in mid-January. However, as we read in a recent BBC article, the choice that the students make could be drastically effected with nearly 30 universities in England considering lowering the fees they have said they will charge from next year.

Over the past year the Government Fees will rise up to a limit of £9,000 next year but the changes mean some universities might want to charge less. With the proposed reduction of fees at some universities means that young people hoping to apply for university next year cannot yet be certain of the fee levels of the institutions they are considering applying to. In addition to this, the cost of university fees may also affect students decisions on whether they want to save on living cost by applying to a university closer to home rather than studying in a city further afield.

To read the full article click here

A huge proportion of Grant Property's tenants are students and the changes in university fees have greatly effected thousands of students across England. Currently, Scottish students studying in Scotland will pay no fees and Welsh students will be subsidised wherever they study in the UK.

Will the changes make a difference to which university you apply to? What are your views on university fees? Will the cost of university fees on top of living cost mean that you will have to attend a university closer to home? We would like to hear your views on this. Landlord removed windows and front door from pregnant teenager's flat in rent row

A recent article found on STV website reported that a landlord removed the windows and front door of the home of a teenager who was eight months pregnant. Property developer Steven Simpson, 48, left Michaela Landless, 18, crying hysterically in her dressing gown, Cupar Sheriff Court was told during the trial.

This eviction was unlawful and there are sufficient laws in place to protect tenants. However, it was reported that Mr Simpson ordered his three sons to rip out windows and the front door of her two-bedroom flat in the Fife town after she struggled to pay the £500-a-month rent. Not all doom and gloom...

We recently read an article on STV's website that reported Edinburgh University has been ranked in the top 100 universities in the world. A huge proportion of our tenants living in our properties to rent are students. Grant Property operate in  all the major Scottish University cities, such as Stirling, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow. We are pleased to report that in the same league table, Glasgow and Dundee were also ranked with Glasgow just missing out on a top 100 spot as it came in at 102.

We think this is great news for all our students as it's good to hear that students in these particular cities are in a good place, studying at a top university. This is a positive attribute to have studied at these universities and as it sets those students apart from the crowd. On that note we also read that a Swiss company is to create 500 skilled jobs in Scotland over the next five years. The Scottish Government said the 500 jobs will include at least 75 posts for graduates from Scottish universities. More graduate positions are expected to be created over the next five years, the Scottish Government said and Edinburgh is seen as the number two financial market in the country. This is great news for graduates and offers hope that the future is not all doom and gloom like we are used to hearing these days! Read the full article here.

Dress Down Friday

Grant Property believe in doing our bit by regularly giving to charity. Every Friday at Grant Property Head Office, we ditch the business wear and all opt for the more casual look. Everyone who comes to work on a Friday can wear their jeans as long as they donate £1 for the pleasure. All of the money raised is then donated to a chosen charity.

The photos in this post are of some of the Grant Property team in their casual clothes last Friday. The money raised that day was donated to Myeloma UK, which is a charity for a type of cancer arising from plasma cells which are found in the bone marrow.

We regularly change our chosen charity to donate the funds from our Dress Down Friday's and welcome any suggestions. Do you have a charity that you would like us to donate to? Let us know by commenting on our Facebook page, where we will take on board your suggestions.
