Grant Property gives back this Christmas

Due to the success of last year's Secret Santa for Barnardo's, Grant Property decided this year to spread our generosity over three charities - Barnardo's, Forth 1's Cash for Kids and Rock Trust Edinburgh.

Barnardo's and Forth One Cash for Kids

We were absolutely delighted to support Barnardo’s once again - they truly are an amazing charity who work with over 14,500 vulnerable children, young people and their families across Scotland.

In order to spread the Christmas cheer that bit further, we also decided to support Forth One's Cash for Kids and ASC Ltd's Mission Christmas campaign, which was created in order to make Christmas morning a little bit brighter for disadvantaged local children.

They asked people to buy just one extra present this year – to ensure that children in poverty will wake up to a Christmas with presents

Therefore, we asked our staff, tenants, friends and family to donate new and unwrapped gifts to our head office in Edinburgh so that we could pass them on to Forth One's Cash for Kids and Barnardo's.

As you can see on your right, we were overwhelmed with the response and we really cannot thank you enough for the support.

Rock Trust Edinburgh

As well as donating gifts to Barnardo's and the Mission Christmas campaign, we also supported The Rock Trust Edinburgh, which helps homeless or socially excluded young people in the Lothians to enjoy a better Christmas and a brighter new year.

Their role is to advise, educate and support young people to help them build the personal skills and resources required to make a positive and healthy transition to adulthood.

We asked our team to make a monetary donation or choose an 'ethical' Christmas gift card, whereby you could choose your Christmas gifts from a selection.

In return, you received a gift card to give to your relative or friend. The gift then went to one of the young people that The Rock Trust supports to help turn their house into a home.

We will let you all know how much we raised for The Rock Trust as soon as we have the final total available.

No matter how much we raised, we sincerely hope that we have contributed in some small way to Barnardo's, Forth One's Cash For Kids and The Rock Trust Edinburgh - and we hope that our donations will make it a very Merry Christmas for all this year.

Ding Wins Grant Property Scottish Open

If you were on our social network sites at the weekend, you may well have noticed that Grant Property were the very proud sponsors of the 2012 Scottish Snooker Open.

It was a fantastic opportunity for us and we were absolutely delighted to sponsor the event at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility - the first time it has returned to Scotland since the 2010 World Open in Glasgow.

The Grant Property Scottish Open was televised live on Eurosport and various Chinese TV channels, as well as being streamed via liveworldsnooker.tv and Watch&Bet.

And some of the Grant Property team were lucky enough to enjoy the thrilling final, where China's most successful player ever, Ding Junhui, added to his impressive list of accolades by beating Glaswegian Anthony McGill 4-2.

Local favourite McGill had enjoyed a miraculous run to the final, but much to the crowd's disappointment, came up just short against the more experienced Ding.

Grant Property CEO and owner, Peter Grant, said: "We’re proud to have played a part in bringing World Snooker back to Scotland.

“It’s been far too long since we had a World Snooker event in Scotland so we were more than happy to lend our support to this one.”

In this article on World Snooker, Ding, who earned the £10,000 top prize, said: "I played well this week, I made a lot of big breaks and concentrated in every game. I've built a lot of confidence here and if I can keep my form going I can win more titles this season."

McGill, who walked away with £5000, said: "I could have been out earlier, [so] to get to the final is a personal best. But I missed too many easy pots in the end. It was my first time in a big arena and I'll deal with it better next time."

If you were lucky enough to be at the Grant Property Scottish Open, let us know what you thought of it on Facebook and Twitter.

And keep your eyes peeled for more Grant Property sponsored events in the very near future.

Form a Cue for the Grant Property Scottish Open

The World Snooker Tour is returning to Scotland for the first time in two years this weekend - and Grant Property is delighted to be playing a huge role in the event as its main sponsor.

The Grant Property Scottish Open, the first World Snooker event in Scotland since the 2010 World Open in Glasgow, kicks off on Friday at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in North Lanarkshire.

It is the fifth event on the new Betfair European Tour and the whole event, from Friday - Sunday, will be televised live on Eurosport, starting with Jimmy White v Liu Chuang.

The giant sports hall at Ravenscraig will be transformed into an arena housing one televised table and ten other tables, and importantly, spectators can move around the matches between frames.

With a winner's cheque for almost £10,000 at stake, plus crucial world ranking and PTC order of merit points up for grabs, a number of snooker's most famous players are expected to be at Ravenscraig this weekend.

To book your tickets go to the World Snooker website or call 01698 274600.

Save Energy... and Money

At Grant Property, we always get tenants asking us for advice how to save energy in the winter when the cold weather has set in and it is essential to have your heating and electrics on.

So, we decided to scour the Internet to find ways that you can ration your energy use - and we came across this really interesting article in Yahoo Finance.

They compiled a list of 50 methods of cutting back on your energy use to save money over the winter, but we have decided to cherry-pick the most relevant 20 tips for our tenants.

As Yahoo Finance has said, some of these are big, some of them are small, and some you’ll be doing already – but they’ll all certainly help you save energy in the winter.

So, without further ado...

Free ways to save on heating

1. Close the curtains - Windows aren’t as insulated as walls, so draw the curtains and keep the cold out. Don’t let the curtains drape over the radiators and draw the heat out of the room.

2. Keep the radiators clear - If you have the space, try to avoid putting a sofa in front of the radiator as this blocks the heat from the room.

3. Put on a jumper - Finally, of course, there’s the old-fashioned ‘use less’ approach. Don’t expect to wear a T-shirt in the house in December, add a jumper, run the heating for an hour less a day and see if you notice.

Free ways to save on appliances

4. Turn off the lights - Get your family in the habit of switching off the lights when they leave the room.

5. Ditch the ‘standby’ button - By turning equipment off instead of leaving it on standby, you could save as much as £86 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

6. Only charge until the battery’s full - Avoid leaving phones on charge unnecessarily, it can still waste energy.

7. Check your TV brightness - The factory settings on TVs are often too bright for homes, meaning you’re wasting energy. Experiment with a lower setting.

8. Buy a laptop not a PC - If you’re in the market for a new computer, a laptop typically uses around 85% less energy than a new desktop machine, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Free ways to save in the kitchen

9. Defrost the freezer - Make sure your freezer is running to its maximum efficiency by regularly defrosting it.

10. Cut food up smaller - By reducing the size of your food, you reduce the time it needs to cook.

11. Cook in batches - One way to fill the freezer is to cook batches of food and freeze portions. This can also use less energy.

12. Plan ahead - Save energy by defrosting food overnight in the fridge instead of microwaving it.

13. Avoid putting hot food in the fridge - Let it cool down first or your fridge will need to use more energy to stay cool.

14. Boil in the kettle, not the hob - If you need boiling water to cook with, use the kettle and not the hob as it’s more efficient.

15. Keep the oven door closed - Don’t linger with the oven door open, you’ll use more energy as it replaces lost heat.

Free ways to save with water

16. Shave time off your shower - If everyone in your home cut their shower time by two minutes a day, you could save £20 a year according to E.ON.

17. Use your plug - Don’t just run the tap while you need hot water, it’s a waste of energy. Put the plug in and use what you’ve got.

Free ways to save with laundry

18. Fill the machines - Don’t run your washing machine or dishwasher half empty, make sure it’s full and use an economy programme if it has one.

19. Don’t drape the radiators - It’s so tempting to hang clothes on the radiators to dry but this makes the boiler work harder and costs more.

20. Wash at 30 degrees - Many modern washing powders work just as efficiently at 30 degrees as they do at higher temperatures.

So, there you have it. 20 foolproof tips for saving energy, and money, this winter.

Do you have any other tips for rationing your energy use in order to save money? If so, please let us know so we can share your tips with the rest of our tenants.

Grant ProperTache - Supporting Movember

The male members of the Grant Property team may look a little differently this month - that's because they will be growing moustaches for the Movember campaign!

For anyone who is not aware; the aim of Movember is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

In order to do so, men across the world begin the 1st of 'Movember' with a clean shaven face, then for the entire month, each participant must grow some facial hair from scratch.

Since its humble beginnings in Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement - in 2011, over 854,000 people around the world got on board, raising £79.3 million.

The funds raised in the UK are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research.

For the rest of November, or Movember as it will now be called, the Grant Property team will chart the progress of their moustaches with regular photo updates on the Grant Property blog and Facebook page.

Below are some pictures of the Grant Property team with their freshly shaven faces. What do you think? Who is capable of growing a moustache to be proud of?

Over the next four weeks, we will be with them every step of the way as they raise some hairs, and awareness, for Movember.

If you want to keep updated with the Grant Property team's Movember campaign, follow us on Facebook and Twitter and remember to keep checking our blog for weekly updates.

You can visit the 'Grant ProperTache' Movember team by clicking HERE, and if you want to donate to the team, you can do so by clicking HERE.

Pretty in Pink for Breast Cancer Campaign

Grant Property is joining the fight against breast cancer this Friday - by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s award winning Wear it Pink day.

Whether dressed head-to-toe in pink for the office, or discreetly slipping on a pair of pink socks under their desk, the entire Grant Property team will be looking pretty in pink.

Now in its 10th year, Wear It Pink, Breast Cancer Campaign's biggest fundraising event, will see supporters from all over the country in schools, colleges and businesses embracing the event’s new theme - superheroes.

The theme stems from the charity’s belief that everybody who joins the fight is a superhero; and we could not agree more.

In the last 10 years, fundraisers have raised an incredible £22 million pounds, and we will be helping the charity achieve its target of £25 million, so they can continue to fund ground-breaking research.

As well as wearing pink and donating £2, small interior items will be available for the Grant Property team to buy by donating money to Breast Cancer Campaign.

As many people are aware, one in eight women will experience breast cancer during their lifetime, however Breast Cancer Campaign is also concerned deeply with the men who are affected by cancer.

Every year, 340 men are diagnosed with breast cancer, and due to the tireless work of the Breast Cancer Campaign, a genetic variation was discovered last month, which leads to a 50 per cent increased risk of male breast cancer.

That is why we all need to support Wear It Pink day on 26 October; so that Breast Cancer Campaign can continue to fund projects with the greatest potential to save and improve lives, and ultimately, find a cure.

If you want to join Grant Property and take part in Wear It Pink, click here to register and receive your free fundraising pack.

Remember to come back and check out our blog next week, where we will have lots of pictures of the day.

Please remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

QR Codes - Explained

At Grant Property, we like to think we are always open to new ideas and technology.

That is why we fully embrace QR codes and use them widely on our business cards, signage, printed materials and advertisements.

We even use them on boilers in our properties, which leads to a YouTube video telling you how to repressurise your boiler. Clever, eh?

Recently though, we have seen some puzzled expressions as people look at our QR codes and mutter to their friends: ‘what are those strange little black and white boxes?’.

So, we thought we should explain exactly what QR codes are and how to use them.

Abbreviated from Quick Response code, QR codes are two-dimensional, paper-based hyperlinks that connect the physical world with the online world, via your mobile phone.

Quite simply, they direct users to mobile landing pages that contain much more information and interactivity.

And while they are still considered a novelty by some in the UK, they have been actively used for over a decade in Japan where they were invented.

Most importantly, viewing a QR code could not be easier. Some phones already have QR code readers available, but if not, the first thing you need to do is to install a QR code reader on your phone.

There are QR code readers for virtually every mobile device type on the market. Gordon White, Managing Director of social media company fatBuzz, recommends paid application Optiscan or free application, i-nigma.

Simply install one of these apps, or find an alternative reader that has favourable reviews, and install it onto your phone.

With the app installed, you will find it easy to scan QR codes. All you need to do is follow these simple instructions:
  • Open the app, which will activate your phone’s camera function.
  • Aim at the QR code and hold still for a few seconds while the camera focuses.
  • An option to go to the information should pop up once the reader has captured it.
  • Enjoy your newly found information, discounts, video content etc.

For an example of how they work, scan the QR code directly to the right.

It will take you to our New Development Property Movie for our latest property in Stirling.

And that’s it. It really is that simple.

So, when you are out and about in the cities and towns you stay in, look out for the Grant Property QR codes for our latest information, videos, properties and competitions.

Please remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Sharing's Caring

With the academic year fast approaching, it is quickly becoming time to flee the parental nest and settle into your new surroundings.

At Grant Property, we know how time consuming and worrying it can be finding accommodation in a new, unfamiliar city.

We also understand that many students coming to college or university may not know anyone in the city and will require room only accommodation.

That is why we are happy to announce that our popular Flatshare Evenings are making a welcome return this Tuesday 14th August and will run every Tuesday and Thursday between 4-5.30pm throughout August and September.

Taking place at our head office at 14 Coates Crescent, Edinburgh, our Flatshare Evenings are specifically designed to help you find flatmates.

The evening will be held in relaxed surroundings with drinks and nibbles on hand so that everyone in attendance has the opportunity to mingle.

So, if you are looking for a room to rent or know of anyone who needs help to find a flat, please come along and we will be happy to help you out.

If you would like any further information on any of our properties, please contact us on 0845 230 2288 or 0333 123 0440.

As more than 160,000 school and college students all over Scotland get set for their exam results tomorrow, it is inevitable that some will narrowly fail to secure the exam grades they need.

Traditionally, those students can enter the clearing system to try for alternative courses, however according to the BBC, Scottish universities are predicting few places for pupils making last-minute bids for courses under the clearing system.

Admissions officers have said demand outstrips supply for the places, which become available when pupils get their exam results tomorrow.

For several years, many of the ancient universities have had virtually no places due to some rationalisation of courses and increased demand in Scotland and from other EU countries.

Thankfully though, it is not all bad news.

Edinburgh Napier and the University of the West of Scotland have some availability, as does the University of the Highlands and Islands, which has government funding for an extra 1,000 spaces in its many centres.

And although most universities are unable to guarantee accommodation to students applying through clearing, you can be sure to find what you are looking for with Grant Property.

With student accommodation to rent in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Stirling, we can help any clearing students looking for a student flat to rent, student house to rent or a student flatshare.

Help is also at hand from Skills Development Scotland, who have set up a dedicated careers advice line which opens at 8am tomorrow.

As the SQA results start coming through, it will offer advice and support to students and their parents about college or university, clearing vacancies, getting a job or finding a Modern Apprenticeship.

Damien Yeates, SDS chief executive, said: "As always our advice is not to panic - making the call is the vital first move in finding out what options are available.

"The helpline is about finding the right path for the individual and we have a wide range of services to help people identify and build successful careers."

We make all our properties carbon neutral...

We are hugely supportive of reducing the effect of Carbon Emissions. But do you know what your carbon footprint is and why it's important to help reduce the effects of Global Warming? Well our friends at Global Trees have a nifty Carbon Footprint Calculator and offer advice on how to be that little bit greener in doing your bit to help our environment.

We make all our properties carbon neutral
Emissions from properties (mainly Gas and Electricity) account for 52% of global warming. When you rent your property with Grant Property we will ensure that we make it carbon neutral by planting trees for every one of our properties. Why? Because trees act as lungs of the world...

Here are a few facts that we have taken from Global Trees to highlight the importance of going green.

Why is this important?
Emissions of carbon dioxide from cars, power stations, etc, increase the greenhouse effect, trapping heat in the atmosphere and melting the polar ice-caps and potentially leading to catastrophic rising of sea levels and changes to the eco-systems on which we all depend

Global Warming is the biggest lasting issue facing us and those who come after us. Almost all scientists and all governments now agree that immediate action is needed to reduce carbon emissions. However, there is little advice in simple English available about what you can do to reduce carbon emissions. Worse, it appears that many people think that only governments and big organisations can do anything.

What can be done?
Everyone can reduce the effect of their carbon emissions (their ‘carbon footprint’).
Everyone can help plant trees! Trees are a key way of taking carbon from the air and trapping it where it can’t harm the planet. They can also help prevent soil erosion: one analysis of global soil erosion estimates that, depending on the region, topsoil is currently being lost 16 to 300 times faster than it can be replaced.

How green are you?
