QR Codes - Explained

At Grant Property, we like to think we are always open to new ideas and technology.

That is why we fully embrace QR codes and use them widely on our business cards, signage, printed materials and advertisements.

We even use them on boilers in our properties, which leads to a YouTube video telling you how to repressurise your boiler. Clever, eh?

Recently though, we have seen some puzzled expressions as people look at our QR codes and mutter to their friends: ‘what are those strange little black and white boxes?’.

So, we thought we should explain exactly what QR codes are and how to use them.

Abbreviated from Quick Response code, QR codes are two-dimensional, paper-based hyperlinks that connect the physical world with the online world, via your mobile phone.

Quite simply, they direct users to mobile landing pages that contain much more information and interactivity.

And while they are still considered a novelty by some in the UK, they have been actively used for over a decade in Japan where they were invented.

Most importantly, viewing a QR code could not be easier. Some phones already have QR code readers available, but if not, the first thing you need to do is to install a QR code reader on your phone.

There are QR code readers for virtually every mobile device type on the market. Gordon White, Managing Director of social media company fatBuzz, recommends paid application Optiscan or free application, i-nigma.

Simply install one of these apps, or find an alternative reader that has favourable reviews, and install it onto your phone.

With the app installed, you will find it easy to scan QR codes. All you need to do is follow these simple instructions:
  • Open the app, which will activate your phone’s camera function.
  • Aim at the QR code and hold still for a few seconds while the camera focuses.
  • An option to go to the information should pop up once the reader has captured it.
  • Enjoy your newly found information, discounts, video content etc.

For an example of how they work, scan the QR code directly to the right.

It will take you to our New Development Property Movie for our latest property in Stirling.

And that’s it. It really is that simple.

So, when you are out and about in the cities and towns you stay in, look out for the Grant Property QR codes for our latest information, videos, properties and competitions.

Sharing's Caring

With the academic year fast approaching, it is quickly becoming time to flee the parental nest and settle into your new surroundings.

At Grant Property, we know how time consuming and worrying it can be finding accommodation in a new, unfamiliar city.

We also understand that many students coming to college or university may not know anyone in the city and will require room only accommodation.

That is why we are happy to announce that our popular Flatshare Evenings are making a welcome return this Tuesday 14th August and will run every Tuesday and Thursday between 4-5.30pm throughout August and September.

Taking place at our head office at 14 Coates Crescent, Edinburgh, our Flatshare Evenings are specifically designed to help you find flatmates.

The evening will be held in relaxed surroundings with drinks and nibbles on hand so that everyone in attendance has the opportunity to mingle.

So, if you are looking for a room to rent or know of anyone who needs help to find a flat, please come along and we will be happy to help you out.

If you would like any further information on any of our properties, please contact us on 0845 230 2288 or 0333 123 0440.

Alternatively, you can email rentahome@grantproperty.com for more details.

Students Face Clearing Struggle

As more than 160,000 school and college students all over Scotland get set for their exam results tomorrow, it is inevitable that some will narrowly fail to secure the exam grades they need.

Traditionally, those students can enter the clearing system to try for alternative courses, however according to the BBC, Scottish universities are predicting few places for pupils making last-minute bids for courses under the clearing system.

Admissions officers have said demand outstrips supply for the places, which become available when pupils get their exam results tomorrow.

For several years, many of the ancient universities have had virtually no places due to some rationalisation of courses and increased demand in Scotland and from other EU countries.

Thankfully though, it is not all bad news.

Edinburgh Napier and the University of the West of Scotland have some availability, as does the University of the Highlands and Islands, which has government funding for an extra 1,000 spaces in its many centres.

And although most universities are unable to guarantee accommodation to students applying through clearing, you can be sure to find what you are looking for with Grant Property.

With student accommodation to rent in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Stirling, we can help any clearing students looking for a student flat to rent, student house to rent or a student flatshare.

Help is also at hand from Skills Development Scotland, who have set up a dedicated careers advice line which opens at 8am tomorrow.

As the SQA results start coming through, it will offer advice and support to students and their parents about college or university, clearing vacancies, getting a job or finding a Modern Apprenticeship.

Damien Yeates, SDS chief executive, said: "As always our advice is not to panic - making the call is the vital first move in finding out what options are available.

"The helpline is about finding the right path for the individual and we have a wide range of services to help people identify and build successful careers."
