Help Grant Property support a child in crisis this Christmas

As we get ever closer to Christmas, Grant Property employees have once again decided to buy gifts for children that will be donated directly to Barnardo's.

We have donated gifts to Barnardo's over the past few years, and we are absolutely delighted to support them once again - they truly are an amazing charity.

Barnardo’s transforms the lives of the most vulnerable children across the UK through the work of their projects, campaigning and research expertise.

They work with over 200,000 children, young people and their families each year, through 900 community projects, and we hope our gifts will help bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas.

Last year, people's unwanted items raised over £10 million towards transforming the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

If you could help us donate Christmas presents or unwanted gifts, we would really appreciate your support.

You can donate by simply buying a small gift for a child, from new born to 16, for either boy or girl, and handing it into your local Grant Property branch.

No matter how much we raise, we sincerely hope that we can contribute in some small way to Barnardo's - and we hope that our donations will make it a very Merry Christmas for all this year.

Grant Property's Top Winter Weather Tips

With the festive period now fast approaching, we want to make sure you are ready for the winter weather, regardless of whether you are staying in your property or if you are away for the Christmas break.

With this in mind, we have pulled together the top tips of what you can do to help keep your property secure and safe during the colder weather.

How can I reduce condensation?

Make full use of extractor fans and hoods, do not dry clothes on radiators, and use the washer dryer or a clothes airer.

How can I avoid mould?

Minimise the moisture in the air of your property by keeping heating on low and opening your windows as much as possible to ventilate the rooms. Wipe and remove any condensation regularly. Remove mould using an anti-fungicidal wash with a clean cloth, so it doesn’t spread.

How do I save energy in the winter, when I need to have my heating and electrics on?

Keep your heating on low and constant; this saves money instead of being on high and sporadic. Turn off all electrical appliances if not in use, do not leave them on standby.

I am going home for the holidays, how can I make sure my pipes don’t freeze?

The best thing to do is set your central heating system so it is on constant at the frost setting or at 10 degrees. This will save you money and is easy to do; just read your instruction manual.

Should I turn the water off if the flat will be empty as we are on holiday?

Yes, the water to the flat should be turned off at the stop cock if you will not be at the property for a prolonged period of time.

What do I do if I have an emergency out with office hours?

Call our ‘Out of Hours Emergency Line’ on 0131 220 6360. If you are transferred to voicemail, please leave a message stating your name, property address, contact number and brief details of your emergency.

For example, if your electricity went off, would you know where your fuse box is? Or how to reset your fuses?

If not, Philip from Grant Property talks you through how to resolve some of these problems with your electricity, and also gives you some tips on how you can avoid these problems.

Ensure your Safety in our Properties!

Over the next few weeks Grant Property will be writing blog posts to help you get settled in to your new properties!

One of the most important tips we will probably give you, is in this video. In this video, Philip from Grant Property, highlights how important it is to always make sure that your smoke alarm and fire alarm are always active, and to make you change the batteries when it is necessary to do so.

I'm sure we won't have to explain to you what could happen if there was an emergency one night and you have no working alarm. So please take the time to watch this video and share with your friends if you have found it useful.

Grant Property help raise funds for Kelbourne Park School

As you may have noticed on our blog recently, the Grant Property Glasgow branch helped support Maryhill Fire Service’s Charity Bed Push on the 3rd of August for Kelbourne Park School.

Kelbourne Park School provides nursery and primary education for children who have additional support needs due to a physical impairment, as well as those who have additional support needs related to language or vision.

And having sponsored one of the beds in the Charity Bed Push, we received a heartwarming thank you letter from the pupils and staff from Kelbourne Park School and the firefighters of Maryhill Fire Station.

The letter said: ‘The firefighters of Maryhill Fire Station along with the pupils and staff of Kelbourne Park School would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all at Grant Property, for the support you have given towards this year’s charity event in our joint effort to raise funds for this local worthwhile cause.

‘This year’s event has raised £3500; this total was attained in no small part by the generous support of yourself and other local businesses.

‘This cash injection, at a time when the economic climate is so restrictive, will provide much needed funds to carry out repairs and improvements to the school. Providing these facilities will enrich the pupil’s experience, during their early school years at this inspiring local school.'

We are absolutely delighted to have played our part in this wonderful event, and we are equally as happy to have helped raise such a fantastic amount of money.

Perfect Property for Pregnant Panda

We know that for many expecting parents, there is a lot of stress about whether their home has enough space to bring a baby into the world.

But worry not Tian Tian and Yang Guang - Grant Property has the perfect place for you.

If you're unsure what we're talking about, it was announced earlier today that there are "strong indications" that Edinburgh Zoo's female giant panda is pregnant.

Now, zoo keepers will not know for sure whether Tian Tian is definitely pregnant until just before she gives birth, but 'results so far are very encouraging' said Chris West, chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the charity that runs Edinburgh Zoo.

If Tian Tian does give birth, we think she'll love this property that we currently have available.

With magnificent forestry and a stunning array of wildlife, this property is perfect for Edinburgh's pandas, or of course, those who enjoy outdoor living. This property also benefits from a spacious lounge and generous fully fitted kitchen, complete with a good selection of bamboo sticks.

OK, OK - we don't really have this property available, but we do have lots of other Edinburgh properties that we reckon even Tian Tian and Yang Guang could comfortably call home!

Click HERE to see our current availability in Edinburgh, and if you want to keep up-to-date with our latest developments, make sure you ‘like’ us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Fantastic Fundraising Efforts for Myeloma UK

In a previous blog post last month, we let you know that the Grant Property team would be raising funds for Myeloma UK throughout July - and we are delighted to say that we managed to raise £525 for the charity!

Myeloma UK are a charity that Marianne Wilson, our Letting Support Supervisor, supports on a regular basis, and like us, she is over the moon that we managed to raise so much money.

For those who don’t know, Myeloma is a type of cancer arising from plasma cells which are found in the bone marrow.

And the charity covers every aspect of myeloma - from information and support, to improving standards of treatment and care through research, education, campaigning and raising awareness.

The generosity shown by the team throughout the month was absolutely fantastic; we organised a range of activities, including a bake sale, a raffle, and special breakfasts and lunches, where all proceeds were donated to Myeloma UK.

We are delighted to have been able to play a small part in not only raising money for Myeloma UK, but raising awareness of this little known cancer.

Firefighters Keep Pushing for Charity

At Grant Property, we have regularly supported the The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service Charity Bed Push - and this year is no different!

The Bed Push, taking place this Sunday 3rd August, is organised by the kind hearted firefighers at Maryhill Fire Station in Glasgow, and all funds raised on the day are donated to the Kelbourne Park School kids.

Kelbourne Park School provides nursery and primary education for children who have additional support needs due to a physical impairment, as well as those who have additional support needs related to language or vision.

The school provides a multi-disciplinary approach, with a range of medical and therapy staff on hand to support the children.

So what is a Bed Push?

On Sunday 3rd of August, some of the kids of Kelbourne Park School will get their beds transformed into a 'fire engine' by the BBC props department, which will then be raced through the streets by the firefighters.

The Grant Property Glasgow branch have went along to various Charity Bed Push's in the past, and it's a fantastic way of raising funds for the school.

Most importantly though, the kids always have great fun!

Over the years, the firefighters have raised over a whopping £40,000 and we are are proud to be sponsoring one of the beds and be part of such a worthwhile cause.

If you would like to donate to this cause or to find out more information please email firefighter Stephen at stephen.bates@strathclydefire.org or call him on 0141 946 223.

We will hopefully have some photos from the day online next week, so make sure you 'like' Grant Property on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to see how much fun we had on the day.

Grant Property Supports Myeloma UK

We have discussed in previous blog posts that Grant Property regularly spread our generosity across various charities, and for the month of July, we will be supporting Myeloma UK, the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma.

For those who don’t know, Myeloma is a type of cancer arising from plasma cells which are found in the bone marrow.

And Myeloma UK, a charity that Marianne Wilson, our Letting Support Supervisor, supports on a regular basis, covers every aspect of myeloma - from information and support, to improving standards of treatment and care through research, education, campaigning and raising awareness.

Just last month, it was Myeloma Awareness Week and this interesting and informative video, which you can view below, was created to explain more about myeloma and the services that the charity provides.

We have received our Myeloma UK fundraising pack which includes banners, balloons, t-shirts and pens, so the Grant Property office is going to be decorated BRIGHT ORANGE (the charity’s colour) throughout July!

We will also have a range of activities, including a bake sale, a raffle, and special breakfasts and lunches, where all proceeds will be donated to Myeloma UK.

In addition to this, our staff pay to dress down each Friday, and these donations will also be put toward Myeloma UK.

Not only should we be able to raise a considerable amount of money for Myeloma UK, but we will hopefully also raise awareness of this little known cancer.

We will upload pictures and information on our progress throughout the month, so make sure you ‘like’ us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to keep up-to-date.
