What's on in your city this weekend

Summer is still on and Nottingham’s own are doing it for themselves too - it’s all about British entrepreneurship at Smithy Row this weekend. The rugby season is warming up too. Wherever you are pick a side and get behind a side in the Scotland vs Italy game this Saturday.

Up North, in Aberdeen, get ready to rave in Union Terrace Gardens all day Saturday. Gig In The Gardens 2015 is just £15 and it all kicks off at 2pm with Majestic, Darius Syrossian and more taking it right through until 11pm.

In Dundee get creative folk and get involved with the Dundee Commons Festival. Loads of unique, free events have been happening across the city this week, bringing together the Dundonian community.

Whether you’re a native or a visitor check out Ricochet  - a show by dancers from The Space. It starts under the Tay Road bridge at 11am and moves through the city. On Sunday try walking meditation in The Howff Cemetery at 11am. Find out more here

Stellar Scottish humour will amuse, and likely abuse, at Caird Hall - Kevin Bridges arrives on Sunday night, with guests and stays until Thursday, 3rd September.

In Stirling Loop Theatre are hosting the first in a nine week block (running until October) of two hour workshops at Workhouse studio for people with learning disabilities. For fun, creative workshops wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes. It runs until October £72  - sign up here.

The Edinburgh Festival is nearing it’s end and Glasgow Based National Theatre Scotland’s show Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour was given The Stage Edinburgh Festival Fringe Acting Excellence Award. It’s the last show on Saturday - see some of the hottest Scottish talent before it closes here.

In Glasgow those lucky enough to have tickets for Bellahouston Park Paolo Nutini plays With Grace Jones, Dundee’s The View and Tuff Love on Friday, Glasgow’s own Calvin Harris on Saturday as Part of Summer Sessions. If you don’t have and can’t wangle a ticket on Saturday  Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnstone host A Love From Outer Space at SWG3, £9 a ticket. It kicks off at 10:30pm and keeps going right through to 3am.

Further South, in Nottingham, lovely Nottingham Trent Uni alumini ladies Hannah & Georgie and Rhea Clements of Handmade Nottingham host their second event, Summer Market  - a craft and food market with 30 stalls of British made beautiful things. Their first, in July, was hugely enjoyed so check out the goings on at Smithy Row this weekend.

Grant Property What's on Weekend

The carnival atmosphere continues across the country so here's our pick of what's hot and happening this Summer weekend.

If you're in Aberdeen The Pretty Things Peepshow is a thing of beauty and intrigue at The Tunnels on Saturday evening. Doors open 7pm and the show starts at £8.80.

Get musical at Dundee's central library – come along and try your hand at Scots or Gaelic song, or attempt to play the whistle, fiddle or harp. There's a chance to nosey (FREE) around the art and animation produced by the Masters students at Duncan of Jordanstone too from Saturday 10am to 4pm.

Glasgow will be awash with rainbow colours this weekend for Pride Glasgow – there's a street party and parade from 12 noon til 10pm at Glasgow Green. At the Kings Theatre Saturday is the final night of The Curious Incident Of The Dog in the Night Time.

Up North in Stirling local textile artists display their work at Arc Gallery in the fittingly titled Threads on Saturday from 11am to 4pm – there are workshops too!

The Edinburgh Festival continues apace and it's the final day of The Beanfield from Warwich University graduate company Breach Theatre. It's a thoughtful but brilliant piece that shows that this generation do care about politics. Also running from Friday to Monday at The Pleasance, venue 23, is the Big Bite Size BreakfastShow. This is rotating comedy from the White Room Theatre Ltd with free coffee, croissant and strawberries – how civilised.

Nottingham too will bring funny men to the Glee Club this weekend. On Saturday night treat yourself to 4 top comics and some grub for just £16.50.

Have fun, laugh much and don't forget to Instagram it!

What's on This Weekend? Grant Property's top picks!

This weekend it's more a case of what's not happening in Scotland than what is - here are our top pics!

At the Edinburgh festival our top must sees are: Fills Monkey: Incredible Drum Show – for anyone who's ever been captivated by Stomp this French group are a must see at the Pleasance Courtyard, £11.50. BLAM! - a dreary workplace hilariously becomes a world of superheroes £14.50 at The Grand and Thrones! The Musical, A parody of ice and fire – a hilarious parody of Game of Thrones at Assembly Rooms £14.

For something deeply Scottish outside of the capital head to Glasgow Green, the green heart of the city to see 8000 pipers and drummers as they compete for the World Champion crown in Glasgow on Saturdaty.

In Stirling Rupert Goold’s True Story comes to Macroberts Art Centre. This film is chilling and intense and follows Michael Finkel's story.

If you're out and about in Dundee kick of your Saturday morning with some keep fit at the Camperdown Park Run 5k Free at 9.30am.

Further North the Queen of bitch is taking Yap, Yap, Yap to HMT in Aberdeen, 8pm on Saturday evening, proving that it's not just the capital that can host comedy.

Wherever you are this weekend enjoy, make the most of it, and let us know what you've been up to!

Introducing Raeesa Ijaz - Saltire Foundation - Receptionist and Property Management Intern

Name Raeesa Ijaz
Studying Pharmacology at the University of Glasgow
Role Receptionist/Property management intern.

What would you be doing with your summer if you weren’t here?

If I wasn’t a part of the Saltire foundation this summer I would most likely be doing a life sciences related internship or doing voluntary work abroad.

So far what’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your internship?

Probably the biggest challenge has been adjusting to full time working hours after getting spoiled by flexible timetables as a student. Plus handling rail disruptions and extended travelling but all part of the fun of acting like an adult this summer.

What have you most enjoyed?

The most enjoyable aspect of being an intern at Grant Property has to be working with such a great team. The staff have been beyond helpful and lovely and made me feel part of the team immediately. Although they are very busy, they are always on hand to help and give advice when needed.

As a new member of the Grant Property team what has impressed you most about the company since you started?

The most impressive aspect has to be the efficiency and cohesion of so many different
departments and sub-contractors working together to efficiently make sure properties are ready and tenants are happy. There is a lot happening behind the scenes and it has been interesting gaining an insight into that.

What three top tips would you share with students thinking about applying for the Saltire Foundation next year?

1. Prepare as early and thoroughly as you can. Read up on the Saltire Foundation and
their aims – It is a very competitive process and lack of preparation can seriously hinder
chances of getting in.

2. Don’t be afraid to put yourself forward for positions that you don’t have experience in. This is the perfect time to acquire skills in a new field and learn more about other sectors.

3. SELL YOURSELF!! You are your own brand and need to advertise your skills and talents as well as you possibly can. Scholars are determined and ambitious and the internship is an excellent platform to network and improve your business skills.

What's on in Scotland's cities this Weekend?

The weekend holds promise – August is one of our favourite months and we've been promised some Summer sun too.

Across our wonderful country Scotland has some great entertainment to offer – there's art, pop up foodie heaven, dancing and live music – all before you even look at the packed schedule on offer at the Edinburgh festival!

If you're in Aberdeen get cultured with a wee visit to Radoslaw Liwen's new exhibition at Newave Gallery – this Polish artist has roots in Graffiti and street art – get some!

Grab a mate, parent or neighbour with a car if you're in Dundee and road trip out to Strathtyrum for the Balgove Larder pop up Steak Barn. You're guaranteed one pop up deli to remember! If you're driving back at night keep an eye out for the Perseid meteor shower and tweet using #ddskywatch every time you see a shooting star!

Edinburgh Festival – what more can we say! In the capital you're in for a treat – get involved in the festival, DON'T be a grumpy local! If you haven’t already round up the stragglers and organise a trip to Late N’ Live at the Gilded Balloon.

In Stirling this weekend – get along to Macroberts Arts Centre and be inspired by local dancers at Stageworx Summer Showfest 2015 at 1pm. For a perfect afternoon follow up with a Stirling favourite – afternoon tea at the Bluebell Tea Rooms!

Tonight in Glasgow it's the second night of the Magners Summer Festival at Kelvingrove Bandstand 8pm – 10.45pm. It's King Creosote tonight. Tickets vary from night to night and as you're in the heart of the West end you're surrounded by the bars of Finnieston and Byres Road when it's all over. Perfect!

Introducing Lauren Buchan - Saltire Foundation Property Management Intern

Name Lauren Buchan
Studying Marketing at the University of Stirling
Role Property Management Intern

What would you be doing with your Summer if you weren’t here?

I'm really happy that I've got this opportunity through the Saltire Foundation, as it's been a personal goal of mine to get into Saltire since I first heard of it two years ago.

However, if it didn't work out I would probably try to do something as much fun as possible for my last summer before I'm out into the big bad world. Maybe try to travel or volunteer. I have volunteered for the past 2 summers to get office experience and I think I would have done it again this year but maybe more focused on charity. A charity relating to helping kids in particular, most likely. Or maybe if I rallied up some troops I would have gone inter-railing to see some of Europe. Either way though, I'm loving this experience so far and I wouldn't change it.

So far what’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your internship?

As it happens, I came into Grant Property right before the busy season starts. Because in Stirling basically all of the flats are student lets, meaning in the summer almost all of the properties have move-outs, move-ins or change of tenancies.

One challenge I have faced is that every week gets busier than the last, with the phones going off the hook with problems to be solved. The challenge is using my initiative to deal with problems, as everyone is the office is getting increasingly busier and less able to guide me through it. More often than not now, I'm able to deal with phone calls by myself, rather than handing them off to other people.

What have you most enjoyed?

I have enjoyed getting out and about the flats in Stirling, a nice change from being at a desk all day! Doing viewings is pretty enjoyable and last week I led one by myself, which was great.

As a new member of the Grant Property team what has impressed you most about the company since you started?

When I learned I was coming to Grant Property I honestly thought they were just a property management company, but I quickly learned that they are so much more than that.

I think it is such a unique idea that Grant Property has to guide property investors through the entire process of owning property. From sourcing it, to doing a full re-dec in just 6 weeks, to finding tenants and then managing it - it's the full package! The investment team in particular are very impressive, sourcing clients from all over the world, particularly ex-pats who have a passion for investing in the UK - it's a pretty cool job!

What three top tips would you share with  students thinking about applying for the Saltire Foundation next year?

1. You won't get another offer like this one - just do it!!

2. If you do decide to apply, you have to make your application form stand out. Even if it is just an interesting anecdote - show Saltire why they should invest in you.

3. Don't be disheartened if you don't get an internship straight away in the first list. Getting an internship through Saltire is a process to find the right fit for YOU, and if you don't make the cut in your first interview, learn from it and don't let it hinder you. In fact Peter Grant (CEO of Grant Property) said to us Saltire interns at lunch yesterday 'don't worry if an interview goes bad - it's another opportunity to learn and get better for the next one'.

Our Tasty Italian Baked Tattie

Baked tatties are by their very nature versatile and easy to make. Not only that but they are cheap, filling and can be cooked with a microwave alone! We've advised using the oven here as in our humble opinion it makes for a tastier tattie – fluffy potato on the inside with a tasty shell.

Our recipe here tops them with a tasty Italian inspired topping but the variations are endless! It makes four – so treat your flatmates to dinner!

What you need:
  • a fork
  • sharp knife
  • chopping board
  • cheese grater
  • oven tray
  • small pan
  • garlic press
  • 4 baking potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Red onion (you will only use 1/2)
  • garlic clove
  • 60g pack sliced pepperoni
  • 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • 100g mozzarella
  • Salt
  • Pepper

How it's done:
  • Preheat your oven to 180C
  • Prick potatoes with a fork once - then place on baking tray for 1 hour - 1&1/2 hours
  • Grate your mozzarella (or buy pre-grated)
  • Finely chop red onion
  • Remove the skin from your garlic clove and crush (if you don't have a garlic press crush under the heel of your knife)
  • Tear pepperoni and basil
  • Heat oil in a pan – gently cook onion at a medium heat until golden.
  • Add and garlic and pepperoni and salt and pepper and cook for two more minutes.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, turn up the heat to boil and stir regularly.
  • Add half of the basil then remove from the heat.
  • Potatoes are ready when they a knife slides through them easily.
  • When ready remove and slice open, top with even amounts of Italian sauce, basil and cheese – then serve!

Introducing Andrew Bond - Saltire Foundation Social Media Intern

Name Andrew Bond
Studying Law at the University of Dundee
Role Social Media Intern

What would you be doing with your summer if you weren’t here?

I’d like to think I would be travelling, seeing new places and exploring South East Asia. However, in none of my travels have I found a place where money grows on trees, meaning my finances would run short very soon.

Coming from a rural area, I usually do seasonal farm work in the summer as it’s well paid. As fun as it is farming really isn’t what I want to do with my life. This internship at Grant Property is giving me a hands-on way to explore one of the areas that I’m really interested in working in: marketing. Furthermore, it is helping developing skills necessary for careers and will allow me to save up some money to travel again!

What is the biggest challenge?

Finding the balance between working independently and getting a lot of help from your co-workers. Working independently, using your initiative and being as little a burden as possible to your colleagues is an essential skill. However, you also have to make sure you’re getting things right. Grant has giving me a good blend of guidance and support, while also granting me some autonomy to get on with the job.

What have you most enjoyed?

Running my own projects. I was given some great guidance at the start going on some marketing campaigns with the team before being kindly asked if I wanted to run my own.
Much more goes into the simple things than you think, as you propose your projects, set out the logistics, costings and what you hope to achieve.
I’ve just finished my project of unofficial photography at Dundee, Abertay, Edinburgh University and Glasgow Caledonian University graduations, which we used as content for our Facebook page.

Seeing the thing through from start to finish may not have been easy, but it was extremely fulfilling!

As a new member of the team, what has impressed you most?

The sheer size of the operation and its slickness. Walking into the Edinburgh office, you’re met with a grand reception overlooked by a huge oval dome. The three floors are split into their different areas of the business such as letting support, property management and finance and investment upstairs.

The office runs on a very methodical system. Things are clearly split and delegated, giving the office much more of “running like clockwork” feel than other offices I’ve been in before.

What tips would you give to people applying for Saltire in the future?

1. As with most big things in your life such as choosing a university or making a large purchase RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.

Really research the Saltire Foundation thoroughly, this needs to stretch more than skimming their website before you hand in your application.

Research by reading as many blogs as you can on Saltire’s blog “the gither”. With the wide range of internships and applicants, there are so many blogs that can keep you entertained for hours.

Reach out to previous Saltire Scholars: Saltire isn’t just a network, it’s a community. People
are willing to help each other. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people for advice, interview
help or just to find out more about them and their Saltire journey.

Use your career service: university career services love Saltire and they know their stuff.

They will help you with questions, look over your application and much more. Stay close to your career service, they can be a huge asset to getting in to Saltire and other vocational dilemmas you may have.

2. Be confident. Confidence may seem simple, but confidence if one the biggest assets you will ever have. Don’t confuse your self assurance with arrogance. Realise your limitations, be humble and have the confidence to exceed your expectations.

3.  Do not be afraid to fail, particularly with Saltire FoundationIt is very competitive. My fellow Saltire Scholars blow me away with how impressive they are. Not only are there many amazing people that are on the scheme, but many amazing people who never found an internship.

I was lucky in that the Grant Property internship was a perfect fit, but I could have easily not become a Saltire if it hadn’t popped up.

Even if you don’t think you’re as impressive as other candidates, apply anyway. You’ll gain a lot through the process. You may just find that Saltire see something in you or that there is an internship that is perfect for you.

If you don’t get in, don’t worry, be positive and learn from it.
