Guest blog - Why student societies are fantastic

January's off to a flying start and if the holidays aren't already over it's nearly time to head back to Uni. It means saying goodbye to mum and dad, and it's time for refreshers fayres too. It's a second chance to join a society, a great way to learn something new and could help fulfil your new years resolution. We've asked a man who knows his societies to tell you what's good about them.

Student societies are fantastic…

I know students have a lot on their plate. Between juggling coursework, part time jobs and a social life, being part of a student society may be the last thing on your mind.

But student societies have a lot to offer. There’s many reasons to join and student societies are the backbone of the university experience…

Your CV

Students are in a tough position. Economic downturns and a huge rise in higher education enrolment have made graduate jobs more competitive than ever. You need to be well rounded to the get the job you crave. Student societies can help with this.

Being in a society look good on your CV and there are specific societies set up to enhance employability skills! If you’re at Glasgow, check out the Bright Futures Society, or if you’re at Dundee, learn all about business and entrepreneurship with The Enterprise Gym.

Exploring passions and interests

There’s a huge range of societies at universities and potential to try something new and develop some real interests for later life that don’t centre around Netflix binges. If you’re at Aberdeen, why not become a connoisseur in one of Scotland’s national drink, with the Malt Whiskeysociety? At Edinburgh and love gaming? Get involved with Edinburgh UniversityGamesoc.

Socialising

University societies have a huge social aspect, bringing together people from all over the world. Use societies to make friends, socialise and above all, have fun. University is one of the best experiences you’ll ever have. Make the most of it: get involved and enjoy yourself.
Our guest blogger is Andrew Bond, a law student at the University of Dundee. Andrew is involved in many student societies including the Enterprise Gym, the University Ski Club and is President of DundeeUniversity Law Society.
