Our guide to what's on this (not quite) spring weekend

It might only just feel like spring outside, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a blooming marvellous time wherever you are this weekend. Here’s a sneak peek at some of this weekend’s highlights:

In Edinburgh there’s an anniversary party going on as The Sunshine Underground celebrate 10 years of great music. Head down to Voodoo Rooms tonight from 7pm to catch a rare acoustic set from the band.

For more fantastic music from Scotland’s finest talent, head to the Bodega in Nottingham this Friday to catch Dundee’s Model Aeroplanes. Get your indie rock fix here from 8pm.

All Stirling residents can head to Cumbernauld Theatre tonight, where there’s a special celebration of three lives from 7.45pm. The play 30:50:80 celebrates the landmark point in three women’s lives, and just how the times have changed over the generations, the perfect celebration of International Womens Day 2016 too.

It may not be warm enough to downgrade the winter clothes just yet, so why not make the most of the chill and enjoy some Ski Touring? Leaving from Dundee it’s taking place from 8am until 5pm, this one-day course is for skiiers who already know their pizza from their French fries on the piste! You should already be able to ski red runs in control and ski uphill in order to take part.

In Glasgow, the Magners Comedy Festival is in full swing, and Saturday night sees The Reverend Obadiah Steppenwolfe III take to the stage at The Stand. Not for the faint-hearted or easily-offended, this comedic attack on political correctness starts at 5pm. If that’s too early for you, there are plenty of other shows across the city all evening.

Don’t rest on your laurels this Sunday, at least not in Aberdeen where Marti Pellow and his fellow bandmates will be playing! Let the old school wash over you and feel the love all around at the AECC on Sunday evening, with doors opening at 6.30pm.

Much more than Mother's Day weekend

It may be Mother’s Day on Sunday, but that’s not all that’s going on this weekend. Before you spoil your mum rotten, take a look at all the other great things you can get up to before handing over the card and flowers:

In Dundee tonight, Mark Thomas tackles comedy, journalism, theatre, activism and general mayhem in his Trespass show. Moving on from his 100 Acts of Minor Dissent, you can be sure of one thing – no-one knows where this show will end up! Catch it at Dundee Rep from 7.30pm, tickets £15.

If you love music but aren’t quite the budding rockstar, head to the Tolbooth in Stirling this evening for a free intro to music journalism. Journalist, radio presenter and blogger Nicola Meighan leads proceedings in this week’s Friday Night at the Tolbooth Presented by StirlingDIY Press Collective.

Those in Nottingham get something a bit more classical with the West Bridgeford Operatic Society’s 70th Anniversary performanceof Sweeney Todd. See the demon barber like you’ve never seen him before, at the 2pm matinee or 7.30pm Saturday evening show.

Saturday night is the night to pay homage to one of the most iconic British bands of the 80s – Joy Division. Head to Krakatoa in Aberdeen from 8pm whereyou can hear tribute act New Dawn Fades strumming right through to the wee hours.

Glasgow’s Barrowlands hosts a special fundraising evening on Saturday night, raising cash for the Clutha Trust. The iconic gig venue is host to loads of local talent on the night including Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5, Girobabies and Have Mercy Las Vegas among others, for just £10 of your finest sterling.

If Mother’s Day hasn’t knackered you out by spoiling your number 1, then make the most of Wee Dub Festival 2016, held at various venues throughout Edinburgh. There you can catch a stellar line up from 7pm right through until 3am, so grab your dancing shoes and go for it.
