Nightlife

Aberdeen boasts a huge variety of venues ranging from trendy clubs to homely pubs - and on any day of the week, you are guaranteed a great night out.

There is a vibrant music scene that regularly attracts major tours and gigs by the biggest names around, combined with venues and dance floors which promote the home-grown talent of local acts and DJs. We'd highly recommend checking out the lanes around Belmont Street, where student-friendly clubs and bars sit alongside wide courtyards ideal for a summertime beer.

Retail Therapy

Aberdeen is home to major retail outlets, department stores and supermarkets. In addition to the main shopping areas, Union Street and George Street, there are four large shopping centres in the city. From big-city chain stores and quirky independent boutiques, to supermarkets and tailors for kilt-hire, Aberdeen has it all.

March Madness at Grant Property

The letting team at Grant Property were rushed off their feet last month - due to an unprecedented demand for rental properties across Scotland.

High student demand across the UK is making it difficult for young people to secure traditional city centre rental properties.

And in just seven days at the beginning of March, we conducted an astonishing 507 viewings, which led to 59 properties being rented out; a significant increase on the same time last year. 

Properties were rented out across Scotland, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Stirling and Aberdeen.

The incredible demand led to our swamped letting team having to limit the amount of potential tenants viewing any one property simultaneously, in order to manage the crowds. 

Peter Grant, CEO of Grant Property, said: "The demand for viewings last month was really quite amazing, and we had to work hard to ensure everybody was accommodated.

Grant Property Invest in Championship

After our success sponsoring The Grant Property Scottish Open last year, we are delighted to announce that we are sponsoring another sporting event, but this time we're swapping snooker balls for golf balls!

The Sky Sports televised Grant Property Investment Championship, part of the PGA EuroPro Tour, will be played at Moray Golf Club from July 10 to July 12. 

The 54-hole event will be played on the Old Course at Moray, with some of Europe’s finest young golfers competing to win a £10,000 cheque! 

The PGA EuroPro Tour, one of four satellite tours to the European Tour and the only one in the UK, will stage four events in Scotland this year.

The tour makes up part of the third tier of European golf with successful players progressing to the Challenge Tour at the end of each season, putting them one step away from a European Tour card.

The winner of The Grant Property Investment Championship will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous PGA EuroPro Tour players such as Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel and Ryder Cup winners Ross Fisher and Nicolas Colsaerts. 

Daniel Godding, the PGA EuroPro Tour’s Director of Operations said: "It is great to be able to bring four of our events to the country this summer and the backing of Grant Property Investment has enabled us to make our debut at Moray."

Grant Property Stirling Sponsors 'Safe 4 Kids'

Our Stirling Office recently sponsored a local project called 'Safe 4 Kids' - a campaign to promote awareness in local schools on road safety. The local school which we chose to sponsor was Allan Primary.

Initially the project had set a target of getting 5500 of the safety computer games into schools, but with the support of our Stirling Office - we managed to give out over 8300, and as a result the accident level fell by 2%!

The sponsorship  project proved to be a success and at Grant Property, we hope to continue working on good causes such as this one in the future!

Safe 4 Kids are trying to create awareness among children about different aspects on danger such as road safety, internet safety, stranger danger, drug abuse, vandalism, crime prevention as well as many more.

Breaking The Mould

Dampness and condensation are some of the most common problems in rented properties, so in our latest blog post, we will explain how to recognise condensation and how to reduce its effect.

What is condensation?

Before we go any further, it is important to understand exactly what condensation is.

Condensation forms because the moisture in the air can no longer be held as a vapour, so returns to liquid form. This occurs when warm moist air comes into contact with either cooler air or a cooler surface.

Mould growth is a typical sign of chronic condensation and occurs as spores which are always present in the air. These spores find water (condensate) and organic material (dirt and grease) that support their life cycle.

Mould is a significant health risk to asthmatics, anyone with other respiratory conditions, the very young and elderly people. The high humidity levels associated with condensation also enables house dust mites to flourish, and the droppings from these microscopic creatures, as well as mould spores, can cause allergic reactions which are also linked to the onset of asthma.

How to recognise condensation

Diagnosis of condensation cannot be just visual; measurement of temperature, humidity, ventilation and consideration of insulation qualities and heating patterns need to be undertaken. However, typical signs of condensation to look out for include:

• Mould growth on wall surfaces, around external wall openings and in areas of low air circulation or poor ventilation
• Misty wall surfaces 
• Water staining and streaking on walls, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens
• Patches of damp with no obvious edges

What action is required?

We ask all tenants to ensure that our properties are sufficiently ventilated by taking a few simple precautions stated below in order to avoid condensation and the build-up of damp.

BEDROOMS

Open bedroom windows when you go to bed at night; a 10mm gap will do. If it really is too cold to do this, wipe the condensation off the windows first thing in the morning.

SHOWER/BATHROOM

Ensure full use of extractor or ventilation fans. Where these are not provided, open a window after bathing or showering to give the steam and damp air a chance to escape. Wipe windows, walls and mirrors to remove condensation and dry the shower tray or bath.

KITCHEN

When cooking, make sure you cover pans. Use extractor or ventilation fans where provided. If you do not have an automatic kettle, take care to ensure it is not left boiling.

WINDOWS

Keep glass as clear of condensation as you can. Wipe away any moisture that has formed using a soft cloth. Leave open any ‘trickle’ vents in double glazed units. Get into the habit of opening windows to keep the moisture content in the air down and to air the property whenever you can.

LAUNDRY

Avoid drying clothes on radiators. Tumble dryers should be vented to the outside, unless fitted with a condenser.

HEATING

Provide a reasonable level of heating (no less than 10°C in an unused area, or 16°C if in use); cold rooms are susceptible to condensation.
