How to Avoid Student Debt

Written by Stuart Carmichael, Chief Executive at debt advice charity Debt Support Trust

You’ve taken the decision to become a student and further your career opportunities, but financially it can be a complicated process. You’re being offered credit for the first time in the form of credit cards and “free” overdrafts from your local bank to help you meet your educational goals. However, it’s not uncommon for students to leave further education because they can’t afford the associated costs of studying.

It’s recommended from Universities and Colleges that students don’t work more than 16 hours per week so they can dedicate themselves to their studies. Other sources of income include a student loan and potentially a bursary but these don’t necessarily cover the cost of living.

Sadly, however, students are not entitled to housing benefit, but they are able to get a rebate on their council tax.

Living at home and studying locally can save valuable pounds on rent and other household expenditures, but this isn’t always possible. If parents aren’t able to offer financial support then students may have to work and study simultaneously.

There are a few tips we can offer students to help them manage their finances and avoid getting into debt.

Common Student Debt Problems & Advice to Avoid

Its important students are aware of the common pitfalls they may face on their way to achieving their qualification. There are solutions and options to resolve all of these financial issues.

Overdraft: Banks and building societies will offer students an interest free overdraft, typically called a Student Overdraft, where money is offered without any interest being charged. The pitfall is that you can access thousands of pounds and once you stop studying your interest will commence. Students entering the world of work will then owe money to their bank.

Furthermore, some banks have been known to lend £1,500 to a student and then reduce the overdraft with limited notice. Students will rarely have the money available to repay the bank, so they will be charged an unauthorised overdraft fee.

Credit Cards: It’s standard procedure for many banks to send credit cards to people on their 18th birthday. It’s often too tempting for students, especially on a budget, to refuse the extra credit facility. While a credit card can improve your credit rating, being unable to repay the minimum payment could lead to debt collectors demanding money.

Council Tax and Rent: Students don’t pay council tax but if they rent privately with flatmates who work, then they may be asked to contribute towards it. Student accommodation could help with this problem.

Payday Loans: Some students who work part time have found themselves trapped by payday loan debt. The interest and charges can make it difficult to repay the original loan, especially for students on a low budget.  Recent payday loan adverts have targeted students with the allure of instant cash, however with annual interest rates in excess of 4000% these can be difficult to repay. Payday loan companies can be among the most difficult to negotiate a repayment plan with too.

Bursaries and Student Loans: Students must finish their course or they will have to repay their bursary. One of the most common problems we hear from students is that they have used their bursary and loans for socialising, which has led to not having enough left for funding their course.

What Should You Do If You Get Into Debt?

A debt problem which isn’t resolved will only grow and become a bigger problem. Debt can affect a student’s ability to focus on their studies as well as their personal relationships, so seeking debt help is imperative.

Regardless of your financial situation, it’s good to know what your disposable income is each month. This is the money available after you have paid all your essential bills and living costs. So, start by considering your income monthly – bursaries, student loans and employment. Then, look at your expenditure, for example, what is you rent, electricity, gas, travel and other costs each month? When you minus your income from your expenditure you will have your disposable income, which can be used to service existing debts, saving and for entertainment.

A local citizens advice bureau or a debt advice charity like Debt Support Trust can offer financial advice to resolve debt problems.  If you’re experiencing money worries then Debt Support Trust can be contacted on 0800 085 0226 between Monday to Friday. Alternatively, you can complete their debt test at www.debtsupporttrust.org.uk for immediate online debt help.

What's on Weekend

Halloween and bonfire night are behind us so it’s officially winter nights but no worries there are great gigs on across the country. So get dancing and chase the miserable nights away with a sing along.

Tonight at The Reading Rooms in Dundee, Boddika will bring raw techno and have the whole building jumping til 3am.

The Fratellis are playing in Fat Sams, Dundee on Friday and up in Aberdeen on Sunday night.
On Saturday Dave Pearce takes Dance Anthems to the Cotton Club in Aberdeen.

In Stirling it’s less techno more smooth jazz as Brian Kellock and Tommy Smith take to the stage at the Tolbooth.

Tonight in Glasgow Jess Glynne takes to the stage at the Carling Academy. This lady’s already made a name for herself by contributing vocals for Clean Bandit’s Rather Be and Route 94′s My Love this year. Her debut solo single Right Here is coming soon so hear her now. On Saturday it's Chompsky's biggest event yet at The Glue Factory, with graffiti art and spray paint fun with portable food. Intrigued, you'll have to head along.

For a lot of quirky stand up fun head to the Alona Hotel in Motherwell on Saturday night, Dave Gorman is taking his ‘gets straight to the point (the powerpoint)’ tour there.

In the capital what was a one off night has returned by popular demand. Far Out is a heady blend of jazz fusion, world music with all proceeds going to support refugees from Syria through The UN Refugee Agency.

In Nottingham tonight is the very first Pop Up Party at Beauty Temple on Queen Street – the doors open at 7 and tickets are just £15 for an evening of Bare Minerals makeup, a hand or foot treatment and more as well as a DJ to get you in the party mood.

Sit up straight: How to avoid bad posture

In our latest guest blog from sports therapist Murray Collier, founder of Murray Collier Massage, explores how student lifestyles can lead to aches and pains, and shares advice on how to avoid it.

Growing up, I remember being instantly shot-down when complaining of achy joints or sore muscles to my elders. "You’re too young to have a bad back" makes top of the list of things I'd hear in return. Now, I know there is no clear correlation between age and posture.

Being young is fun: climbing trees, running around and moving like the beasts we are. Then something happens. All those years sitting at school catch up on us.

When we hit university problem gets worse. We are glued to a seat for hours, the systems that govern our body's posture begin to adapt, negatively. If muscles become over-stretched, over-worked or 'facilitated' our brain starts to respond with soreness, achiness, pain and nerve irritation.

I notice more issues with students who have been in education for longer and see more issues in students who study a heavily theoretical subject, than those who move slightly more.

However, it's not all negative. There are plenty of strategies available, individually or collectively to keep aches and pains at bay.

1. JOIN A SPORTS CLUB OR GYM

I currently work with Edinburgh University's men's first football team but was surprised to discover they have four different age and skill level groups for football alone. They offer the same in hockey, basketball, rugby as well as great sport facilities. Ability isn’t a barrier to sport but if it isn't your thing at student gyms you can simply get your regular fix of movement.

2. GET A PRO TO ANALYISE YOUR POSTURE

"Sit up straighter" and "keep your shoulders back and down" doesn't quite cut it with us. Once the structural reason behind why you are experiencing soreness or poor posture is fully understood, it becomes simpler to fix.

We look at your posture and identify areas for both us, and you to work on. Visiting a professional just once, you can come away with sound advice, applicable to your own body.

3. SIT LESS

This will either sound too simple, or a bit of a nag. However think of the time you are seated during the day, could you be moving more? Could you squeeze in just 5-10 or more minutes of movement that wasn't there before?

4. TAKE WALKING STUDY BREAKS

Don't take a sitting break - take a walk. Do you do some work then check something on Youtube? Studies have shown movement increases brain activity and concentration significantly. A walking study break will help you clear your mind and get back on task all whilst helping improve posture.

5. JOIN YOGA

Yoga is great fun and if you can stretch and strengthen the right areas whilst having great fun, then it’s a win-win. If you are based in Edinburgh, I can tell you Canning Street Yoga offer the best yoga classes I've ever had.
